Head Coach Shane Clipfell
On the game overall…
“I am most impressed with how many times the game went back and forth. The fact that we took a nine point lead and then turned it into a two-point deficit fairly quickly. It's a sign of the growth and maturity in this team because before they would have looked around and asked how to stop this but now they know. This team is growing up and I think they are starting to realize they have more capabilities than they give themselves credit for. I look at Alex Morton first because I look at her when things go wrong and I look at her when things go right, and she's starting to get used to that. Your maturity starts with your point guard and I think she's definitely growing up.”
On defending Dorch and Reed-Lewis…
“Those guards are tough. They have speed that we don't have and we knew that coming in. We knew they were going to be a challenge. Our ball-screen defense could have been better and maybe some different looks or variations, but the girls found a way to fight through that and persevere.”
On Harris' end of the game basket…
“That play was the key to the game. We call those types of plays a special situation and Toledo is really good at that when you watch them on film. We were able to turn that in to a special situation where we came out on top and that was a huge moment.”
On Harris and Woods' performance…
“We got their guards in foul trouble, but we got in a little bit of foul trouble too. Marquisha took the game over when Miracle went to the bench with her third foul. We were just riding her, and we tried to get her a rest but it was hard to get her off the floor for very long. Then we were able to get the combination back in there and I think it got us back in to a nice flow.”
On Morton's performance…
“It started a long time ago with Alex. I asked her to do some things over the summer to prepare her to be a point guard and she did them. I don't' think she knows yet how good she can be. I would call her my long-term investor, and what we are challenging her to do is to become a little bit more of a risk taker. I don't even know if she's away of that yet, but she is working on it. We put a lot of pressure on her and ask her to do a lot of things and she's growing up.”
Junior Forward Marquisha Harris
On her end of the game basket…
“That play was a huge spark. Alex said she knew she missed it for a reason so that must have been the reason. That play really sealed the deal for us.”
On playing with Miracle Woods…
“I felt like we were really on the same page this game. I was making sure to look for her. Coach always tells us we need to look for each other because a lot of times the guards can't get it in to us.”
On what the win over Toledo means…
“We can beat anybody as long as we play together the way we did tonight. We played defense and were boxing out, and it's all of those little things that people tend to forget about but if we continue to stay fundamentally sound we can play with anybody.”
Sophomore Forward Miracle Woods
On the aggressive tone of the game…
“I've been working on my game a lot. I tried to stand there with my hands straight up but it seems like everyone gets a piece of my body even I'm not trying to touch them. I've really been working on it though.”
On her confidence under the basket…
“I felt pretty confident. I had her basically one-on-one a lot and she can either foul me or I might miss but I'm going to take the shot.”
On playing with Harris…
“Marquisha and I have great chemistry on the court now. It is better for a pass to come from a post instead of a guard so it makes sense for us to work together. We definitely are getting more in to sink with one another.”
Sophomore Guard Alex Morton
On her performance…
“The point guard coach has been working with me a lot. We've been watching film and she gives me tips and helps me to get better in certain areas of my game. Now it's up to me to show that on the court. I wasn't trying to force anything tonight either. I always want to look inside to our posts and give other people the best chance they can get. I just tried to take what I was given without forcing anything.”
On WMU's defensive performance…
“All of their guards, especially Dortch and Reed-Lewis, are quick and we knew we had to defend their shots and their drives. AJ and I were trying to work together on that. They have a good guard mix on their team. I think we played a lot better team defense. We've really been working on that and I think this game proved it.”
