Western Michigan Baseball Drubs Chicago State, 12-1

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan had 16 hits in a 12-1 non-conference win over Chicago State Wednesday at Robert J. Bobb Stadium.

Both sophomore shortstop Andrew Sohn and sophomore right fielder Jared Kujawa went 3-for-5 at the plate and were a home run short of hitting for the cycle. The pair also scored three runs and stole a base each. Sohn drove in a career-high five runs while Kujawa drove in three.

Western Michigan was aggressive on the base paths, stealing six bases total. Theo Piccirilli, Vinnie Booker, Steve Buglione and Jordan Tillman also swiped a bag.

Piccirilli was the third Bronco with three hits, batting 3-for-4 with a double. Booker and Hunter Prince (RBI) had two hits apiece.

Western Michigan (10-17) scored two runs in the first and another in the third to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Chicago State tallied its lone run in the sixth, unearned, after pitcher Will Nimke had trouble handling a ball in the infield against the leadoff batter.

WMU countered with a run in the bottom of the sixth, added two more in the seventh and pounded out six runs on four hits in the eighth. Sohn belted a bases-clearing double in the eighth for three of his RBIs.

Nimke (1-3) earned his first win of the season, holding Chicago State (3-16) to just two hits over six innings. He fanned two batters and walked none.

Patrick Haynes, Monty Porter and Nick Bradley each worked an inning on the mound out of the bullpen.

Western Michigan returns to Hyames Field this weekend to host Ball State in a three-game Mid-American Conference series. Friday's game one begins at 3 p.m., followed by 1 p.m. contests Saturday and Sunday.
