WMU Legend Wayne Gagne Named to CCHA All-Time First Team

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- Western Michigan hockey legend Wayne Gagne has been selected to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association All-Time First Team as a part of the CCHA's Celebrate the Legacy initiative to highlight the league's top players from the past 42 seasons.

Gagne, a defenseman, was selected by a committee of coaches, administrators and media. The panel voted from the previous CCHA All-Decade teams of the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and the 2000-13 team that was announced previously.

The Toronto native played at Western Michigan from 1983-87. He appeared in 162 total games in the Brown & Gold and racked up 241 points on 42 goals and 199 assists, putting him third all-time in program history. Gagne was a part of the 1986 CCHA Tournament Championship team and was also a part of WMU's first ever NCAA Tournament team.

His junior year he was the top scoring defenseman in the country and was eventually named an All-American along with First Team All-CCHA and a member of the CCHA All-Tournament Team. His senior season he registered an astounding 89 points from the blue line and was named the CCHA Player of the Year. He was once again crowned as an All-American and finished as the runner-up for the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award.

Gagne was elected into the Western Michigan Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001.
