KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan posted a 95-44 victory over Trine University in the Broncos' final preseason game Tuesday at University Arena. The Broncos led 44-24 at the half and held the Thunder to two points through the first eight minutes of the second half, going on a 22-2 run.
Western Michigan shot 53.3% for the game, and outscored Trine in the paint, 40-14, and off turnovers, 34-15. The Broncos also held a 50-28 rebounding advantage.
“I thought we shot the ball a lot better today than we did Friday night, so I am happy about that,” said WMU head coach
Shane Clipfell, referring to the Broncos' 82-58 exhibition win over UM-Dearborn on Nov. 2.
“I felt defensively, we harassed the ball a little bit more and were disruptive to their shooters. Defensive position is the same whether you are playing an NAIA school, Division III school or a Division I school. I'm not completely happy with it, but it's been pretty good across the board. Now can we do that against better players? We're about to find out.
“Probably the other biggest difference is we have dominated the boards in these first two (exhibition) games and we are going to have to work a whole lot harder to even stay even, these next two games in particular.”
Western Michigan officially begins the 2013-14 season with a pair of road games this weekend. The Broncos travel to UMass Friday, Nov. 8, and then face two-time defending America East champion Albany two days later, Nov. 10. WMU returns to Kalamazoo to host Detroit in the home opener, Nov. 14.
