SOUTH BEND, Ind.. -- Shane Berschbach netted his seventh goal of the season to force overtime between Western Michigan and Northeastern in the opening game of the 2013 Shillelagh Tournament but after a 1-1 tie the Huskies topped the Broncos in a shootout, 1-0, to advance to Saturday's championship game.

On the power play Sam Mellor fired a shot wide from the top of the right circle and Justin Kovacs passed it to Berschbach and the senior forward poked it in from just in front of the net to square the game 1-1 with 7:51 remaining in the third period.

The Broncos ramped up the pressure, outshooting NU 11-6 in the third period, but were unable to capitalize in overtime. Dalen Hedges was the lone player to net a goal in the shootout, while Justin Kovacs, Dennis Brown and Berschbach missed out on converting their opportunities.

Frank Slubowski made a game-high 32 saves for Western Michigan, who faces the loser of the Alabama-Huntsvillle and Notre dame night cap. Northeastern Goalie Clay Witt made 30 saves in the draw as well.

The Huskies' lone goal came at the start of the second period. With a power play Braden Pimm took the puck from the opening draw into the right circle. Pimm passed the puck through traffic to John Stevens and the freshman centerman fired it into the net for his third goal of the season.

The Bronco penalty kill finished the night six-for-seven and were able to convert on one-of-five chances.  Northeasten held the overall shots on goal advantage at 33-31 on the night with nine of its shots coming during the seven power plays.
