Buzzer Beat Falls Short as Bobcats Down Broncos

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - David Brown just narrowly missed what would have been a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of regulation, and the Western Michigan men's basketball team lost a 61-59 heartbreaker to the Ohio Bobcats at University Arena on Saturday.  With the loss, the Broncos fall to 8-7 overall, 0-2 in Mid-American Conference play.

The Broncos trailed by as many as 12 points in the game, but pulled to within one possession at the end of the game.  Facing a baseline out-of-bounds situation with 1.1 seconds on the clock, Borwn caught the pass and sent it towards the hoop, but could not get the shot to fall as the Broncos lost their first home game of the season.

Jared Klein came off the bench and brought a spark to the Bronco offense, notching a career-high 18 points that included an 11-of-12 performance from the free throw line.  Shayne Whittington posted his fourth double-double of the season, recording 10 points and 13 rebounds in just 24 minutes of play.  However, the Broncos shot just 28.3 percent from the field in the game, effectively hindering their chance of a comeback.

The teams fought through a foul-plagued first half, with neither establishing much rhythm in the start-stop first period.  The Broncos made up an early 5-2 deficit against the predicted MAC champions, with Nate Hutcheson making a lay-up at the 15:54 mark, and Shayne Whittington making a pair of free throws at 15:19 to give his team the lead.  WMU would make up another lead a few minutes later; with his team trailing 10-6, Hutcheson would throw down a fast break dunk to get things moving, and Jared Klein made a pair of free throws to give the Broncos an 11-10 lead.

Both the Bobcats and Broncos held the lead at various points throughout the half, but Ohio would be the team to carry the advantage into the break.  The Broncos led 25-24 with just over a minute remaining in the half, but the Bobcats scored five straight down the stretch to take the lead heading into the locker room.

The Broncos pulled to within two points of the lead early in the second half, with Austin Richie driving the lane and scoring on a lay-up at the 17:07 mark to make it 31-29.  The Bobcats would build the lead to as many as 12 points in the second half, but Whittington scored four straight for the Broncos to pull the score to 43:35 with 10:51 remaining in regulation.

Brown helped slice the Bobcats' lead to just seven points, making a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 46-39, but Reggie Keely converted a three-point play for the Broncos at the 8:35 mark to put the lead back at double-digits.  Klein responded with a three-pointer from the right corner to make it 49-42, and Brown would convert a three-point play with a lay-up and a free throw at the 7:30 mark to make it 49-45.

Klein made a runner as the shot-clock expired to cut the Bobcats' lead to 52-47, taking off for the lane and lifting the shot as the buzzer went off.  Klein made a slick pass at the 4:03 mark, finding Whittington under the hoop for a lay-up.  Whittington drew the contact in the process, and made his free throw attempt to cut Ohio's lead to 56-51.  Klein scored a pair of free throws with 19 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 60-57, and on the next possession stripped Ohio's D.J. Cooper and laid the ball in to make it a one-point game, leading to Brown's shot.
