WINTER HAVEN, Fla.- Western Michigan opened the back half of its
Florida schedule with a 13-7 loss to defending America East Tournament champion
Maine Wednesday.
The Broncos spotted the Black Bears seven runs, three unearned, in the top
of the first inning and never recovered. WMU cut the deficit to three, scoring
four runs in the bottom of the first, but Maine went on to plate a pair in each
of its next two at bats to lead 11-4 after three innings.
Each team scored a run in the fourth and WMU tallied its final two runs in
the sixth. Maine capped the scoring with a run in the ninth.
Western Michigan senior Ryan McMillin hit a two-run double deep to center field
in the first inning and drove in another run with a single to left in the sixth.
Sophomore Vinnie Booker scored three of WMU's seven runs. He went 2-for-3 at
the plate and had four stolen bases, tying the school single-game record. He was also hit by a pitch twice.
Left-handed junior Mike Moyer (0-1) took the loss after giving up five runs
in the first, one unearned. Freshman RHP Nick Bradley was the most effective of
three Bronco relievers on the mound, yielding just one run and two hits over
3.2 innings.
Justin Leisenheimer hit a two-run homer for Maine in the top of the second.
Freshman RHP Luke Morrill earned his first collegiate win for the Black Bears,
going five innings and surrendering five runs on six hits.
Maine improved to 4-6 on the year with the win, while WMU's record slipped
to 4-7.
Western Michigan takes on Penn tomorrow at 11 a.m. and faces North Dakota
State Friday at 6 p.m. The Broncos conclude their Florida spring trip Saturday
with games against Bradley and Illinois State.
