WMU - Michigan Quotes

Opening Statement from Coach Hawkins...

I was really proud of how hard we played, for the most part, all night long.  We really shot ourselves in the foot with the turnovers we had in the first half.  I think it led to 16 points for them in the first half.  I didn't think we were doing a bad job of guarding them in the half court, but we got into trouble when we turned it over and they were able to get into transition.  Some were those passes that get intercepted and they can go out and run, and other times we were committing charges and giving them the ball.  We ran some decent offense, but down 14 at half, it felt like we were closer than that, and they were rolling in the second half.  They're a great basketball team.  They countered, and for the most part it was Trey Burke.  There are some players that take a few possessions to adjust to a change in gameplan against him, but Trey Burke sees it and counters it right away, and it ends up in an open shot for someone.  He's a big-time player that makes everyone better.

On Whittington's foul trouble...

It affected us some, but it didn't affect our turnovers.  I thought Dan Loney and Shayne Whittington came in and gave us some good minutes.  Where it affected us was their ability to get their second shots and rebounds.  We were able to get the clean rebounds and get out and run ourselves.  He was able to go back in and get some minutes.  I thought he did a good job of playing with two fouls.  It affected the game a bit from a rebound standpoint, but I thought we did OK.

On the turnovers...

I feel like we shot ourselves in the foot.  I felt like a huge difference in the game was guard play.  We did not do a good job moving the ball side to side.  When we did, we were able to get some good looks.  We just didn't handle their ball screen defense very well.
