DETROIT -- Western Michign defeated Michigan State, 1-0, in a shootout after a 1-1 tie in regulation to advance to the finals of the Great Lakes Invitational on Sunday at 7 p.m.
Mike Leone netted the shootout winner in the fifth round to give the Broncos the win after WMU goalie
Frank Slubowski made three stops and forced two misses. Slubowski also made 22 saves in regulation.
Mike Cichy netted the lone goal for the Broncos.
Cichy took a pass at the bottom of the right circle and skated in alone on Jake Hildebrand. His shot hit MSU goalie Jake Hildebrand's shoulder and deflected into the net for his third goal of the season to give WMU a 1-0 lead at 10:21 in the first period.
Chase Balisy earned his sixth assist of the season and
Jordan Oesterle tallied his fourth.
The Broncos could not hold the lead as MSU's Matt Berry netted the game-tying goal with 16 seconds remaining in the third period. The Spartans had the extra attacker on the ice after pulling Hildebrand.
WMU had a power play in overtime but was unable to capitalize despite outshooting MSU 5-2 in the extra stanza. For the game the Broncos were 0-for-5 with the man advantage but also shut down the Spartans on their power play, allowing just one shot on goal during their three.
Western Michigan plays the winner of the Michigan versus Michigan Tech game for the GLI Championship.
