KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan goalie
Frank Slubowski made 23 saves and
Trevor Elias netted the lone goal for the Broncos completed the sweep by shutting out Northern Michigan, 1-0, in front of a sellout crowd of 3,871 on Saturday night.
Elias netted his second of the season fifth in his career against Northern Michigan at 5:36 in the second period. The speedy senior picked up the puck on a pass from
Ben Warda at the top of the left circle, skated along the circle and back-handed it into the net past NMU goalie Jared Coreau. Warda tallied his second assist of the season and
Justin Kovacs also notched his second on the game-winning goal.
Slubowski made 12 of his 23 saves in the third period, the only time the Wildcats outshot the Broncos in a period all weekend. He also made five saves on three Northern Michigan power plays, including a five-on-three.
NMU goalie Jared Coreau made 37 saves but earned his eighth loss of the season.
Western Michigan hosts Ferris State on Friday and Saturday next weekend for a pair of 7:05 p.m. starts. Saturday is WMU's annual teddy bear toss. The Broncos ask fans to bring a teddy bear to toss on to the ice during the first intermission.
