WMU vs NMU - WMU Quotes 11/30

Head Coach Andy Murray

What'd you say during the time out?

I said we need to play a little bit more physical, we need more edge, and exactly what you just said. But the bottom line is you call a time out, more than anything, to just get your team refocused. And our guys knew what they had to do. We have to recognize that the other teams want to win, too. But they're a well-coached team. They've been in the CCHA final four a number of times. So, nothing's going to come easy. They were playing well and we turned the puck over a couple times, and made a couple poor decisions, and that second goal? Probably Frank wants it back, too.

2nd goal

Frank was solid the rest of the way, but more importantly we managed the puck a lot better, kept the puck in their zone, did not turn it over, made better exit decisions coming out of our zone. So I think what happened there was we made Frank's job a little bit easier, an he was certainly there when we needed him after that point. But we'll need to be better tomorrow night. We outshoot 'em 39 to 10, but it didn't feel like that kind of game. I mean my heart was in my throat right up the last minute there. You need an empty net goal to seal the victory. That was a real battle out there. It certainly was, in a game where a team looked like it had that type of an advantage in shot.

They play a real physical style at Northern, we know that, and you have to prepare for that. And you have to expect to be hit. And it's a lot more fun to be hitting than to be hit. So we tried to step up our physical game as well. I didn't like the two penalties we took, it was by our gray unit, and our gray unit can't be taking penalties.

Kenney Morrison

Yeah, the start of the year there I was struggling to hit the net. And then obviously I practiced every day there with Danny and Brown, on the one-timers. Now I'm seeing the payoff here, and it's going good.

His goal

Yeah it's something we work on it practice usually every day. Brown just feeds me a nice pass and I just try to hit the net. And this one went in.

Taking Tennyson's place

Obviously Tennyson was a good player. Got a wicked slapshot. So coming here as a freshmen, you just try to work hard. Making your spot to the power play, keep your head up, and rip the slapshots.

Getting the first goal out of the way kind of takes the weight off your shoulders. This kind of play has been working lately, so we're just trying to go for it. If they come over to me, obviously Chase and Bershbach are wide open.

Defense

We kept things simple. They usually have two forecheckers on us, so we try to play in their zone most of the period. And that worked out.

CHASE BALISY

His goal

We started off pretty slow ther, and I ghink we needed a litlte bit of ajoltthere to get us going. I think that goal really helped us out there, got us going, and that's when we started playing our best hockey.

On coach during the time out

I've actually seen worse, honestly. But he was pretty mad. I mean, four minutes into the second and you're down two goals? But we came back strong and that's all that matters.

First goal

I just try and put pressure on the goalie, and sometimes it happens. It's just kind of a lucky break there that the goalie just turned it over and I had the empty net there so I was pretty lucky.

We're getting our chances. We're a team that's going to score goals in front of the net, so we just need to get there.

Our power play's really precarious the last couple of weeks, but we're going to get going here in a 5-on-5 over time.

During the penalty kill

When my teammates get the puck and they're shorthanded, I just kind of start taking off there a little bit, hopefully put some pressure down ice. Dane found me a couple of weekends ago, an this time just pressure on the goalie there, and the turn over. Put pressure on their guys and they'll make mistakes hopefully and we can capitalize.

Coming home

You know we haven't been home in about a month now, so I think anytime we get to play home games it's pretty exciting. Playing in front of the Lunatics and all the fans it's a lot of fun. I think we definitely fed off their energy tonight.

Dane Walters

We've always been able to come out really strong. We've had great first periods and our weakness so far this season has been our second, we've been kind of lacking, kind of on our heels a little bit at the start of the 2nd periods and I don't know what it is but it happened again tonight. After coach called that time out we pulled it together, we went out and we got a quick one and then we got another one to tie it up going into the 3rd period. Ultimately that's what we wanted. We wanted to tie it up and give ourselves a chance going into the 3rd period.

Balisy's goal

That was just an all-effort goal it was a bad turnover by their defensemen. Chase took advantage, took it in, and buried it. When you've got a guy who can make plays like that, it's really special and it lights a spark for the team. I would say that was one of the large turning points of the gam for us. We were able to gain momentum and go on from there.

Defense

I like to think that we have some of the best defense in the country. These guys are unbelievable skaters. They're big, they're strong. That's one of our team goals, from our defense to our forwards forwards blocking shots, denying shot lanes, it's always one of our main priorities in our defensive zone. And tonight it showed. The last couple games we gave up way too many shots. And we wanted to make a point of it tonight to really limit shots. I mean they still had some scoring opportunities, which we could work on, but I think that overall we did a very good job.
