KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team opened its 2011-12 dual match season with a pair of victories, defeating Detroit 6-1 and Bradley 7-0 at West Hills Athletic Club. With the wins, the Broncos improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Broncos began the day with a convincing 6-1 win over the Detroit Titans, controlling tempo in doubles play and outlasting the Titans in singles competition. The pairing of Ross VanderPloeg and Nadin Indre took the No. 1 doubles match, defeating Alex Latosinsky and Mike Basha 8-4 on break match point. Moments later, Simon Blomberg and Zeyad Montasser finished off their opponents in the No. 2 doubles match by an 8-1 score, clinching the doubles point for the Broncos.
Montasser would be the first to strike for the Broncos in singles play, downing Cesar Escobar Serrano 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 5 singles match. Blomberg would post the next singles win, beating David Streeter 6-1, 6-1. Indre would notch the match clincher, using his powerful serve to control the tempo and win the No. 1 singles match against Latosinsky 6-1, 6-2. Senior Pablo Olivarez would then win the No. 2 singles match, defeating Nick Tolomei 6-2, 7-5, and VanderPloeg picked up the final point of the night with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Basha.
In the nightcap against Bradley, the Broncos started out hot and took all three matches in the doubles competition. Indre and VanderPloeg took their second doubles match of the evening, defeating Ashton Kalhorn and Hamish Weerasinghe 8-2 in the No. 1 doubles match. The other two matches did not go down as smoothly, however; Montasser and Marc Shideler held off a late rally from Ahmed Albitar and Justin Abrams in the No. 3 match to win 8-6, and the duo of Olivarez and Blomberg needed a late push to ensure victory over Juan Diego Cuadrado and Arthur Romanet.
In singles play, junior Aaron Wong picked up his first dual match win as a Bronco, defeating Arthur Romanet 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 6 singles. Montasser notched his second win of the night in the No. 5 singles over Hamish Weerasinghe. Indre clinched the team match for the second straight outing, winning the No. 1 singles over Gabriel Townes by a 6-4, 6-4 score. The match in hand, the Broncos completed the sweep with wins from Blomberg, Olivarez, and VanderPloeg.
