CHARLESTON, Ill. -- The Western Michigan track and field team wrapped up the final day of competition at the Eastern Illinois Big Blue Classic, adding three more event titles and several personal best performances.
Ashley Hunault took the title in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 3.50 inches. She finished 3.5 inches ahead of Regina Pierce from Wisconsin-Milwaukee, while sophomore
Stephanie Okolo turned in a quality performance with a sixth place finish and a distance of 17 feet, nine inches.
"We really got a lot accomplished this weekend," said head coach
Kelly Lycan. "From top to bottom we saw significant improvements form the previous week. It really gives everyone a bit of confidence moving forward."
Sarah Morris improved her season-best in the discus, placing second with a distance of 169 feet, one inch. Her throw was just six inches shy of tying her school record.
Stephanie Mitchell placed fourth with a new personal-best distance of 157 feet, 10 inches and freshman
Andrea Hiler finished in sixth with 149 feet, six inches. Morris also went on to place sixth in the hammer throw with a distance of 144 feet, three inches.
"We knew the discus was one of those events that when we finally got outside we had a chance to be pretty good," added Lycan. "Those three did a really good job competing today."
Sophomore
Iris Campbell continued her excellent season with another win, this one coming in the 100m hurdles. Campbell had the top qualifying time and then took .20 seconds off that for a first-place time of 14.04 seconds in the finals. The hurdle group as a whole had a good weekend after yesterday's performance.
Amanda Fenton hit a personal-best time of 14.58, breaking 14.60 for the first time in her career to finish in fourth behind Campbell. Freshman
Chiara Allen placed fifth with a time of 14.63 and fellow freshman
Whitney Freeman finished in seventh.
"I think that hurdle group is really improving and had a great weekend," said Lycan. "Our biggest challenge with Iris will be to figure out which events to concentrate on with her. She is having such a fantastic season."
Campbell also took first place in the 200m dash with a time of 24.37 seconds.
Sophomore
Rachel Whitley and freshman
Andrea Arnold each finished as runners-up in their events. Whitley took second in the 800m run with a time of 2:11.55, while Arnold took second in the 400m dash with a time of 56.23 seconds. Both runners surrendered early leads in their races.
"I think Andrea and Rachel both had really good learning experiences in those races," added Lycan.
The 4x100m relay team placed second with a time of 47.91, just .09 seconds shy of first place Illinois State.
"The 4x100 team is still a work in progress," said Lycan. "We haven't quite ironed out the squad but there were some very good baton exchanges today and I was happy to see that."
In the pole vault junior
Sarah Ross placed second with a height of 12 feet, two inches. Her marks left her just 2.75 inches off of her personal best height.
"Sarah did a good job after registering no height at last weekend's meet," said Lycan. "But she came out today and performed very well and that's the attitude you have to have. If you have a bad week, you have to just put it behind you and then get after it at the next meet and I think everyone on our team has done a good job with that attitude."
"This was a very useful meet for us," concluded Lycan. "Early on in the season it is all about competing. We aren't really concerned about times and marks at this point but we really got a lot accomplished this week by competing hard and getting in a lot of races."
