YPSILANTI -- The Western Michigan track and field team picked up wins in the 800m run, discus and shot put to wrap up competition at the final day of the EMU Twilight Meet on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Samantha Tomerlin took first place in the 800m run with a time of 2:12.19. Tomerlin, normally a long distance runner that ran a 10k last weekend, was brought down in distance to work on her speed. The Allegan, Mich., native made an early move to take the lead but a runner for Bowling Green caught up to her on the final straightaway. Tomerlin was able to out-kick her for the win.
"There was nothing to gain from her winning," said head coach
Kelly Lycan. "It wasn't a scored meet and it wasn't a regular event for her but she decided she was just not going to lose. It was really exciting for me to see that kind of drive, determination and that kind of pride she took in winning that race."
Tomerlin is in the midst of a career-best season and set the school record in the 10k last week at the Mt. SAC Relays.
"Coach
Taryn Sheehan has done such a good job to help her develop into one of the top distance runners in the region," Lycan added. "Sam has done a great job of buying into the training and really working her tail off."
Senior
Sarah Morris got back on track and threw a distance of 167 feet, three inches to win the discus for the Broncos. Freshman
Andrea Hiler finished in third with a season-best distance of 152 feet, five inches, with her distance qualifying her for the U.S. Junior Nationals at the end of the season.
The throwers had a good day all-around as
Stephanie Mitchell finished in first place in the shot put with a distance of 46 feet, 0.50 inches.
Freshman
Andrea Arnold ran in the 100m dash for the first time this season and finished eighth overall with a time of 12.43 seconds into a strong head-wind and won her heat.
Erinma Elibe took fifth overall in the 400m dash with a personal-best time of 57.32 seconds and also won her heat.
Junior
Sarah Ross took third place in the pole vault with a height of 12 feet, 1.50 inches. Ross has seen steady improvement this season in the pole vault and has consistently been over 12 feet, a height that normally scores at the Mid-American Conference Championship.
Sophomore
Rachel Whitley got a crack at the 800m run invitational on Friday night and despite running in the rain and the cold took third place and was the top collegiate finisher. She finished with a time of 2:09.44, finishing ahead of EMU's duo of Lauren Quaintance and Beverly Elcock that finished in first and second at the Indoor MAC Championships.
"It was a pretty high profile field to be competing in and she did a good job to place herself with some of the best," said Lycan. "It's a big boost in confidence to run that well in that field."
Up next for the Bronco track and field team is a trip to Iowa for the annual running of the prestigious Drake Relays.
