RIO VERDE, Ariz. - The Western Michigan golf team scored its best round of the 2011 Rio Verde Invitational, carding a 307 on Sunday to finished tied for 11th with Southern Illinois. Eastern Michigan claimed the team title by one stroke over Northern Arizona with Missouri State's Catherine Dolan earning medalist by four strokes.
The final round of this year's event was filled with drama as Eastern Michigan, NAU and Michigan battled back and forth through Sunday's final round after the Eagles entered Sunday with an eight stroke lead. NAU and Michigan made their charge throughout the final round but were never able to draw even or surpass EMU, which finished with a score of 910, one better than the Lumberjacks' 911. Michigan, the 2010 champion, finished third at 913.
Catherine Dolan entered the final round alone in fourth place after tying for sixth after day one. Dolan began her tournament by opening eagle-birdie and finished it by closing out birdie-birdie to shoot a 1-under par 71 and a three round total of 218 (+2). Four golfers tied for runner up at 6-over par.
Western Michigan's best finish was turned in by Britney Hamilton, who tied for 16th after shooting a 3-over par 75 on Sunday. Briana May scored a career low 6-over par 78 to finish as the field's low individual. She was one of five Broncos to score in the 70's on Sunday's final round, including Leah Grawburg's and Kaylee Imel's 5-over par 77.
The Broncos will return to action on March 28-29 at the Arkansas-Little Rock Invitational.
