FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The Western Michigan track and field wrapped up competition at the final day of the Tyson Invitational with the Broncos breaking a school record and nearly breaking another on Saturday night.
The distance medley relay team of
Rachel Whitley,
Ariel Arnold,
Jeriesha Tucker and
Samantha Tomerlin combined for a time of 11:37.53, second best in school history. It was the first time the Broncos had run a distance medley team this season. Whitley ran a 3:30.60 split to open up the first 1,200m with the sophomore Arnold running a 56.58 split in the 400m dash portion. Tucker ran the 800m leg in 2:15.05 and Tomerlin closed out the mile anchor leg with a 4:55.29 split.
The 4x400m relay team finished 15th in a loaded field but their time of 3:40.95 was the fastest of the year and fell just over a second high from hitting the NCAA Automatic qualifying mark of 3:39.20.
Andrea Arnold led off for the Broncos with a 55.33 second split with
Ashley Hunault following at 55.21.
Iris Campbell then took over and ran a blazing 53.77 split and
Leya Munwam finished up with a 56.65 split. The time was four seconds faster than WMU's previous season best that they set at the Wisconsin Invitational.
Campbell ran in the 200m dash and for the second time this season she broke the school record in the event with a time of 24.36 seconds. She set the previous record of 24.52 at the Wisconsin Invitational earlier this season.
Next weekend the Broncos head to Muncie, Ind., to defend their title at the Ball State Triangular. WMU has won the meet six straight times.
