WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Western Michigan women's basketball team's road woes continued, as the Broncos dropped a 77-52 decision at American University Friday. WMU failed to score in the first six minutes of the game, allowing the Eagles to jump out to a 13-0 lead and the Broncos trailed 49-25 at the half. It was the most points surrendered in the first half by the Brown & Gold this season.
Western Michigan made just four of its first 20 shots before warming up to knock down four of its next six in the final four minutes of the half. Three of those were three pointers with
Jazmine Windham burying two, including one at the halftime buzzer. The Eagles shot a blazing 61.3 percent in the first half, twice better than the Broncos (30.8%).
The Broncos matched their first half shooting exactly in the second, going 8-for-26 from the field. American cooled off to hit 8-for-21 (38.1%) to finish the game shooting a 51.9 percent clip. The 77 points scored tied a season-high for American.
Maria Iaquaniello led Western Michigan with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while going 3-for-4 at the free throw line. She also had a team-best five rebounds. The team's leading scorer (11.0 ppg), Iaquaniello has been a consistent for WMU in her final season and is averaging 15 points over the last four games.
Windham was the only other Bronco to reach double figures with 11 and connected on 3-for-6 from long range.
Michelle O'Brien and
Aurielle Anderson each chipped in seven.
Jen Dumiak paced American (8-5) with a game-high 19 points. Sarah Kiely had 14 and Alexis Dobbs added 13.
Western Michigan (3-9) lost the battle on the boards, 36-27. Both teams committed 18 turnovers.
The Broncos return to Kalamazoo to conclude their non-conference schedule against Temple Jan. 2. WMU opens Mid-American Conference play with a pair of home games, hosting last year's regular season conference and WNIT champion Toledo Jan. 5 and Ball State three days later in the annual PACK THE HOUSE game, Jan. 8.
