The Western Michigan hockey team surrendered three goals in the third period to
fall, 3-0, to the No. 12/13 Ferris State Bulldogs in front of 2,329 fans at
Lawson Ice Arena on Friday night.
After two
scoreless periods in which WMU goalie Riley Gill made 25 of his game-high 34
saves, Ferris State lit the lamp just 19 seconds in to the third period.
Cody Chupp
broke up a Bronco pass in the FSU zone and flicked the puck out to Blair Riley
in neutral ice. Riley passed it to a charging Casey Haines and Haines skated in
on Gill and beat him glove-side. The game-winner was the fourth of the season
for Haines with Riley earning his sixth assist and Chupp with his 12th.
Ferris State
extended the lead to 2-0 at 10:10 after Blair poked the puck away from a Bronco
forward to create a break-away for himself. The CCHA's leading goal-scorer
would not be denied as the unassisted goal was his 14th on the season.
The Bulldogs
scored its final goal of the game just 1:33 later at the 11:43 mark. Mike
Embach lit the lamp for the third time on the season with assists to Jordie
Johnston and Nate Hennig to seal the game for the Bulldogs.
Western
Michigan went 0-for-6 on the power play, firing off four shots, but were able
to hold the CCHA's best power-play team to 0-for-4 with 10 shots. WMU's defense
also blocked 18 shots on the night with Mike Levendusky and Ian Slater leading the team with three
each.
The Broncos
