- Western Michigan (13-7-1) scored three runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth, propelling the Broncos to an 11-1 win over Wayne State in their home opener at Hyames Field on Wednesday. Tim Mowry (1-1) threw four innings of two-hit ball in relief to pick up his first career win.
Wayne State (10-10) put a run on the board in the top of the first but Western Michigan countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Neal Miller scorched an RBI double to right field and Derek Mosher drove in a run with a groundout to second.
WMU broke the game open with three runs in the fifth, extending its lead to 5-1. Zach Gentile was hit by a pitch to start off the inning and scored after back-to-back singles by Joe Sheets and Chris Lewis. A throwing error on the Lewis hit allowed the runners to move to second and third and Sheets scored on a Matthew Abro groundout. Miller drove in the third run of the frame with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Bronco bats remained hot in the sixth, tacking on three more runs to take an 8-1 lead. A pair of walks and a single with two outs loaded lthe bases for Chris Lewis, who delivered, crushing a two-run double to right field, his sixth two-bagger of the season. Abro capped the scoring with an RBI-infield single.
The Western Michigan offense wasn't quite done, as it took advantage of some shaky Wayne State pitching, adding three runs in the bottom of the eighth. A pair of walks, a passed ball and a wild pitch led to the first Brown & Gold score. Pinch hitter Kyle Galbraith plated a run with a groundout to third and Pedro Dager recorded an RBI with a Texas Leaguer to center field.
Mowry replaced starter WMU stater Gus Jacobson on the bump in the top of the third, and worked efficiently, allowing just two hits and striking out four through the next four innings. Jacobson did not surrender a hit in his short outing, but gave up the lone Wayne State score on base on balls in the first.
Four more Broncos saw action on the mound, as head coach Randy Ford put his bullpen to work. Sheets came in from center field and tossed a hitless seventh, and Drew Mahan worked the eighth, surrendering a hit, the third and final hit of the day for the Warriors. Brian Schutzbach struckout the first batter in the ninth and Derek Mosher stepped in from third base to record the remaining two outs.
"Mowry did a nice job, it has been fun to see him develop," Ford said. "I thought our pitching was once again solid, our defense could have been a little bit better. Our offense came out a little sluggish, but responded well after I got on them in the fifth. It was nice to finally get a game in at home, and get a win out of it."
Abro led Western Michigan at the plate with three hits, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Lewis was the only other Bronco to have a multi-hit game, batting 2-for-3 with three RBIs. WMU tallied 11 hits on the day.
WMU committed three errors in the field, while Wayne State had two. The Warriors however gave the Broncos plenty of extra opportunities, issuing 10 walks, plunking three batsmen and throwing four wild pitches.
