KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan Broncos fell at the hands of No. 4 Miami 4-2 at Lawson Ice Arena in front of 2,008 fans on Saturday night.
The turning point of the game was after a Max Campbell goal that knotted the game, 1-1. Only 46 seconds after WMU's game tying goal the RedHawks' Tommy Wingels netted what ended up being the game winning goal at 18:53 of the second period. P.J. Kavaya picked up his first collegiate assist on the Campbell goal and freshman J.J. Crew added his second helper of the season.
Miami opened up the third period with a goal at the 45-second mark on the power play. Jarrod Palmer netted his third of the season on assist from Chris Wideman and Pat Cannone.
The Broncos responded minutes later on a goal by Derek Roehl. Roehl redirected a shot from Kavaya at the far point between the legs of Miami goaltender Pat Reichard for his fourth goal of the season. Kavaya picked up his second assist of the game for the first multi-assist game of his career. Junior Jared Katz earned his first assist as a Bronco on the goal as well.
Miami added its fourth goal at the 12:24 mark of the third period to put the nail in the coffin. This time it was Andy Miele from Gary Steffes and Justin Vaive.
The Broncos were held scoreless on five power plays by Miami, who is ranked No. 1 in the nation on the penalty kill. WMU goaltender Riley Gill made 27 saves in the loss.
Western Michigan will look to keep its weekly point streak alive tomorrow afternoon when the Broncos and RedHawks battle at 4:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
