KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan (11-15, 4-8 MAC) women's basketball team won its third straight, knocking off Ball State, 81-68, Saturday afternoon at University Arena. The trifecta of Carrie Moore, Lindsey Brown and Tiera DeLaHoussaye combined for 73 of the Broncos' 81 points.
“We were just having fun out there,” Moore said after the game. “It feels good to get this win and it was great to do it in front of that big crowd.”
A crowd of 1,489 was on hand on Blackout Sunday to witness the Bronco victory.
Ball State (19-5, 0-3 MAC) won the opening tip, but for the Brown and Gold remained in control the rest of the afternoon. As the first half rolled along, Western Michigan gained momentum, and with 4:44 remaining in the half, had built a 10-point advantage. The Broncos nearly doubled that lead in the following three minutes, going on a 10-2 run, capitalized by a Moore three-pointer and a DeLaHoussaye steal and lay up. Western Michigan took a 40-26 lead into halftime.
WMU was able to push its lead to 17 at the beginning of the second half, but Ball State used a 12-5 run to pull within 10 points at the 8:46 mark. The Broncos responded, and Moore again hit another big three-point basket as Western Michigan rattled off seven-straight points.
Ball State would make one last late run, hitting back-to--back threes and inched to within nine with less than two minutes to go, but the Broncos squandered the the late rally, going 6-for-8 at the charity stripe.
Moore finished the day with a game-high 31 points, her ninth 30-plus game this season. Adding nine boards and five assists, she collected her 800th career rebound. Brown recorded 22 points and 11 rebounds, her seventh of double-double of the season, and second against Ball State this year. DeLaHoussaye hit 8-of-10 free throws, totaling 20 points, nine assists and six steals.
Joining Moore and DeLaHoussaye in a full-game defensive effort, freshman Molly Dwyer played a career-high 40 minutes, holding the Cardinal guards to limited looks.
Western Michigan will look to continue its success on Wednesday, when it travels to Ypsilanti to face Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m.
