Moore's Record Leads WMU Past Miami, 90-68

Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich. ? The Western Michigan women's basketball team (10-15, 3-8 MAC) cruised past Miami (11-13, 5-6 MAC), 90-68, Saturday afternoon at University Arena. Senior Carrie Moore scored 29 points to break the all-time points in a season record of 622 set by Casey Rost in the 2002-03 season.

Moore grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed Molly Dwyer shot and put back the lay up with 7:50 remaining in the game to become the school's all-time season point record holder. She currently has 628 points, and counting. Adding 11 rebounds, she posted her fifth double-double of the season.

Prior to the game, Moore was recognized for scoring her 2,000th career point a week ago at Kent State.

“Every time we turn around, Carrie has broken another record,” WMU head coach Ron Stewart said. “Carrie is given a ball today for something she did last Saturday, and today she does something else.”

Moore wasn't the only player rising to the occasion for the Broncos. Sophomore point guard Tiera DeLaHoussaye put on a clinic, racking up 21 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Dwyer, a freshman who earned her first start, also had a breakout performance, going 4-for-7 from three-point range for a career-high 14 points.

“This game should give Molly some confidence,” Stewart said. “The coaches were talking about recruiting while at Buffalo, and saying that we needed a shooter. I think we may have found her tonight.”

The Broncos charged out to an early 13-4 lead in the first six minutes, as Moore scored 11 of WMU's first 13 points. WMU held a 41-21 lead at the break and picked up where it left off in the second half, pushing the lead to as many as 25.

“We were really solid,” Stewart said. “More than that, the purpose, the energy, the enthusiasm, all of that came together.”

Jaclyn Leininger was Miami's only real threat of the afternoon, scoring 15 of her team-high 23 points before intermission. Amanda Jackson chipped in 16 points.

Game Notes:
- Moore broke WMU's points in a season mark in 25 games. Rost had set the previous record of 622 in 32 games.

- Moore (2,039) needs 23 points to surpass Rost (2,061) as WMU's all-time leading scorer.

- As a program, Western Michigan is just one win shy of 500 all-time. Head coach Ron Stewart needs one conference win to reach 100 career MAC wins.

- DeLaHoussaye's 21 points was the second-best effort of her career, and just the second time she has scored over 20 points.

- Dwyer became the only Bronco besides Moore to make four three pointers in a game this season.

- WMU's 90 points against Miami is its highest point total in MAC play this season, and the third highest total this season.
