BOX SCORE
WASHINGTON D.C.- Western Michigan (2-5) couldn't hold off American in the final minutes, as the Broncos dropped a 65-61 decision on the road Saturday. The Broncos continue their road trip Monday, traveling over to Princess Anne, Md., to face Maryland-Eastern Shore.
Tiera DeLaHoussaye led the Broncos with 12 points and five assists. Amanda Parker added 10 points and seven rebounds, while Brenna Banktson scored nine and Ebony Cleary had eight. Sara Vest grabbed a season-high eight rebounds.
Western Michigan led by four at the break, 41-37, and built a nine-point lead by the 17:37 mark in the second. Points were hard to come by though the rest of the way for the Broncos, as they were outscored 15-2 over the next six minutes. WMU tallied just 20 points in the whole period, its lowest scoring half of the season.
The Broncos held their last lead at 6:21, but kept it to a one possession game until the final seconds. An Eagle free throw with 10 ticks left on the clock pushed the score to 65-61, and WMU was unable to come up with a basket on its final possession.
Breaks didn't seem to go in the Brown & Gold's favor, as Western Michigan attempted just two free throws in the second half, compared to American's 19. The Broncos also turned the ball over 12 times in the second half, committing 21 turnovers total.
American's (4-3) Sahar Nusseibeh was the game's leading scorer with 18 points. Stephanie N'Garsanet chipped in 12.
Western Michigan held the advantage on the boards, 39-33, but the Eagles had a slightly better shooting percentage, connecting on 43 percent of their shots, while WMU hit 40 percent.
Following Monday's Maryland-Eastern Shore matchup, the Broncos return to Kalamazoo for home contests the next two weekends, hosting Illinois-Chicago (Dec. 8) and Temple (Dec. 16).
