KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan women's basketball team (2-2) won its home opener at University Arena against Central Connecticut State (0-3), 88-65. In head coach Ron Stewart's 300th career game, he saw four of his players score in double figures and 11 of the 12 players who competed score at least one point.
Western Michigan jumped out to a commanding 16-point lead midway through the first half after Sara Vest, Brenna Banktson, and Amanda Parker all put up eight points. Banktson was the Broncos' leading scorer, finishing with a career-high 16 points. She also went a perfect three-for-three from beyond the arc.
Parker tied her career-high in points with 15, nine of which coming from three-point land. Tiera DeLaHoussaye broke her career-high in assists with 15, the second best single game effort in WMU history. She accomplished this feat with no turnovers, and was also only one rebound away from a double-double.
Emily Rose led all Blue Devil scorers with 13 points.
The Blue Devils eventually cut the lead to10 with two minutes left in the half, but the Broncos made two buckets with less than a minute remaining, taking a 40-26 lead into halftime.
Western Michigan ran away with the game in the second half, sinking 50 percent of its shots and building as much as a 32-point advantage.
The Broncos will look to continue their winning ways Friday, Nov. 23, traveling to Dallas for the SMU Thanksgiving Tournament. WMU will take on SMU on Friday, and either Drake or Kansas on Saturday.
