KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The offense came alive and the defense did what it does as Western Michigan welcomed visiting Temple to Waldo Stadium and treated them to a 41-7 defeat in front of 15, 739 soaked Bronco fans. Londen Fryar sparked a late first half surge, returning a blocked field goal attempt for a touchdown as time expired.
The game-turning play came when Cory Flom blocked his third kick of the season on a field goal attempt. Flom now owns the career block record alone with four swats over the past two seasons and shares the single-year mark with former Bronco Paul Moersch at three apiece.
WMU (3-1, 1-0 MAC) had three interceptions of Temple quarterbacks Adam DiMichele and Vaughn Charlton and also recovered one of five Temple fumbles. Fryar, the Mid-American Conference leader in interceptions, had his third of the season.
The Broncos have eight interceptions in their last three games, and were ranked No. 8 in the nation in turnover margin entering Saturday's game. The loss was the 16th consecutive for Temple (0-4), dating back to the 2004 season.
However, for the first time this season, the Owls scored a touchdown on freshman running back Jason Harper's first career score -- an 11-yard run in the third quarter. Until Saturday, Temple had scored three points this season, losing its previous two games by a combined 124-0 to Louisville and Minnesota.
Bonds rushed for a game-high 87 yards on 15 carries as the Broncos outrushed the Owls, 151-9, and won three of their first four games for the first time since 2000.
Ryan Cubit, returning to action for the first time in three weeks due to an injured finger, threw for a game-high 143 yards and two touchdowns. He was not intercepted. Jamarko Simmons and Branden Ledbetter each caught four passes. Ledbetter hauled in one of Cubit's scoring strikes, Herb Martin nabbed the first TD catch of his Division I career for the other.
Temple's Domerio Hamilton caught a career-high four passes for 26 yards. WMU's win was its fourth straight over Temple, a former Big East school that is playing as an independent this year and joins the MAC next year.
Western Michigan takes a break from its slate with an upcoming bye week. The Broncos get into the thick of their conference schedule on Oct. 7 with a trip down to Athens, Ohio for a tilt against the Bobcats. Ohio lost, 31-6, to Missouri out the Big 12.
