KENT, Ohio ? The No. 4 seed Western Michigan University baseball team (30-22) ended the 2006 season after falling (4-3) to the No. 1 seed and host Kent State University (37-17) at the Mid-American Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Schoonover Stadium.
All-MAC Freshman of the Year RHP Ethan Hollingsworth took the loss on the mound for the Broncos and falls to 9-3 on the season. Hollingsworth gave up four runs, two earned, off of eight hits while striking out two batters.
The Golden Flashes scored early in the top of the second to take a quick (1-0) lead over the Brown & Gold. Kent State would add two more to the board in the third after some Bronco errors and then tacked on another one with a solo home run from Andrew Davis in the fifth to make it a (4-0) ball game.
In the sixth RHP Dan Coberely came in for Hollingsworth and managed to take the Flashes down in order with a ground out to first and two strikeouts.
Western Michigan got on the board in the bottom of the sixth after senior Mark Abro hit a solo home run to left center. The home run was Abro's second of the tournament and seventh of the season.
Senior Travis May led the seventh inning stretch off with a hit to right field. Freshman Brent Gerlach would earn a walk after being patient at the plate. With two runners on senior RC Dickerson advanced the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Lead off hitter Zach Gentile doubled to right center which brought home May and Gerlach to cut Kent State's lead to 4-3.
Despite the Broncos strong seventh it wasn't enough to take down the top seeded Golden Flashes.
