ATHENS ? Joe Reitz scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds while Donald Cloutier added 12 points and seven rebounds of his own as the Western Michigan men's basketball team defeated the Greek U-18 National Team, 58-45, at Dimotiko Athlitko.
After two straight games against solid professional teams, the Broncos led by two against the Greeks, 8-6, with 5:35 remaining in the first quarter when they went on a 10-0 run over the next 7:39 as they held the Greeks to 0-of-13 shooting from the field and forced six turnovers during the run.
The Greeks hung around and finally cut the lead to seven points, 29-22, at halftime on a three-pointer with three seconds remaining in the half.
Western Michigan came out hot to start the second half using a 12-3 run to take a 41-25 lead with 4:16 remaining in the third quarter. The Greeks answered again with an 11-3 run to close out the quarter and cut the lead to eight, 44-36.
Greece kept up the pressure and cut the lead to five, 50-45, with 4:08 remaining in the game. The Broncos locked down and did not allow Greece to score the rest of the game as they rattled off eight straight points on a long Derek Drews jumper, a Cloutier fast-break layup and four Reitz free throws.
Dan Hess added eight points and six rebounds for WMU while Shawntes Gary contributed eight points including an alley-oop dunk from Andre Ricks and a driving one-handed dunk over two Greek defenders.
The Broncos outrebounded Greece, 45-31, and held them to only 32.2 percent shooting (19-of-59) and 2-of-22 shooting from behind the three-point line.
Western Michigan wraps up the trip on Sunday evening with a second-straight game against the Greek U-18 National Team.
