ATHENS -- The Western Michigan men's basketball team dropped its second straight game in Greece, losing to Dafni, 97-64, on Thursday night.
The Broncos came out strong in the first quarter to take a 16-9 lead 5:32 into the game after nine points by Joe Reitz and four from Andrew Hershberger.
Dafni, a Greek A2 team that has also played in Greek's highest professional league at various times over the past several years, began to show its skill and experience as the game went on. The Greeks went on an 8-0 run in less than 90 seconds to take its first lead, but WMU took the lead back on a Derek Drews three-pointer. Dafni responded with the final five points of the quarter to take a five-point lead, 26-21, and the first six points of the second quarter to build an 11-point lead, 32-21, with 6:54 remaining in the first half.
WMU fought back to cut the lead to five, but Dafni answered and hit a layup at the buzzer to finish the half with a 12-point advantage, 45-33. Dafni did not allow the Broncos to get back into the game at the start of the second half by scoing 14 consecutive points before a Shawntes Gary free throw with 5:25 remaining.
Reitz led the Broncos with 15 points, while Gary added 13 points on 11-of-16 shooting at the free throw line. Drews was also in double figures with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Derek Fracalossi led the Broncos with eight rebounds, including five on the offensive glass.
Western Michigan takes Friday off for a tour of the Greek Isles before resuming play on Saturday and Sunday against the Greek Under-18 National Team.
