KALAMAZOO ? Senior Carrie Moore set a new school record with 41 points to lead the Western Michigan University women's basketball team (1-2) over Detroit (1-2), 85-72, at University Arena Friday night.
Moore was sent to the free throw line with 25 seconds remaining and calmly sank both shots to break former teammate Casey Rost's record of 40 points set in 2003.
"It was a little nerve racking to step to the line with a chance to break that type of record," said Moore. "I just tried not to think about it, because I was in the flow and I was just all about winning the game."
She also contributed 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Amanda Parker and Lindsey Brown added 15 and 12 points, while sophomore guard Tiera DeLaHoussaye finished just shy of a triple-double with 10 rebounds, nine points and nine assists.
The first half was a seesaw battle, which featured a host of fouls and free throws. WMU trailed 24-21, but freshman guard Sarah Dreher was fouled on a layup, and knocked down the free throw to complete the old-fashioned three-point play and cap off a 7-2 Bronco run that helped them regain the lead, 28-24, with 5:55 left in the first.
The Broncos held a slim seven-point advantage, 41-34, at halftime, but a layup by Moore and a jumper by Brown to start the second frame pushed the lead to 11.
WMU held a double-digit lead for a majority of the second half, but Detroit stayed in the game behind the shooting of forward Joyce Massey. With the Brown & Gold on top, 63-56, with 9:21 remaining, Massey was fouled from behind the three-point arc and converted on all three free throws, bringing the Titans to within four.
Moore scored eight of the next 11 points, which silenced the Detroit comeback, and put WMU back on top, 74-62, with 4:22 left the team went on to win the game 85-72.
Detroit was led by Massey who had a double-double with 25 points and a game-high 16 rebounds and Kandace Evans' 20 points.
WMU will take to the road to face Notre Dame on Sunday, Nov. 19, at 12 p.m. in Notre Dame, Ind.
