SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (Jan. 6) ? Western Michigan's road woes continue after falling 6-1 to 19th-ranked Lake Superior State Friday evening at Abel Arena. The Broncos are winless away from home (0-7-3) heading into tomorrow's Central Collegiate Hockey Association series finale at LSSU.
The third-place Lakers (11-6-4/7-6-2 CCHA) scored four goals on special teams (3-power play; 1-short-handed) to run their record to 3-0 against WMU this season.
Mike Lesperance's even-strength goal 1:20 into the second period tied the contest at 1-1. The Broncos (4-12-3/4-7-2 CCHA), however, played much of the second period short-handed, as Jeff Pierce and Lesperance received game misconducts for separate checking from behind calls. WMU killed the first 5-minute major (which included a two-minute super power play) but fell victim to a short-handed marker scored from Mike Adamek at the 11:38 mark ? which started a string of five unanswered goals by the Lakers.
LSSU added two goals in the opening minutes of the third period, forcing a change in the Bronco net. G Daniel Bellissimo was lifted in favor of Eric Marvin, who saw his first action of the season.
