YPSILANTI, Mich. ? Brian Snider scored 23 points to go with seven rebounds, five assists and four steals as Western Michigan won its first road game of the season, 68-62, at Eastern Michigan.
The Broncos (6-11, 3-4 MAC) opened the second half with a 9-1 run to extend their eight-point halftime lead to 16 points, 43-27, with 15:39 remaining on an Andrew Hershberger putback. The Eagles (3-12, 0-7 MAC) ramped up their defensive intensity and held the Broncos scoreless for the next 5:13, but could only cut the lead to nine, 43-34.
Joe Reitz hit a layup with 10:26 to stop the run and the Broncos still led by 13 with 5:46 remaining, 58-45, on a Snider three-pointer and the Brown & Gold hung on the rest of the way.
Eastern Michigan started the game with a 10-4 lead behind two three-pointers from Zane Gay. WMU answered with a 16-3 run over 8:23 to take a seven-point lead, 20-13. Snider, Hershberger, Derek Fracalossi and Derek Drews each hit a three-pointer during the run. Drews hit three three-pointers in the first half for WMU.
The Eagles cut their deficit to three points, 23-20, but Snider scored the last six points of the half for WMU, including a layup with :33 remaining to give the Broncos an eight-point halftime lead, 34-26.
The Broncos shot 43.4 percent for the game and hit 7-of-16 three-pointers. Defensively, they held the Eagles to 38.9 percent shooting, 8-of-26 from three-point land, and forced 19 turnovers.
Hershberger joined Snider in double figures with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and Reitz pulled down nine rebounds.
John Bowler led Eastern Michigan with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Western Michigan looks to move to .500 in MAC play Thursday night at 7 p.m. against Ball State (6-9, 2-5 MAC) in University Arena.
