Greg Jennings eclipsed the 3,000-yard mark for a career and broke a record for the most receiving touchdowns in a game (4). Tim Hiller, a true freshman, tosses five scoring passes, which is tied for second all-time in a single game. In total, 544 yards of offense for the Broncos, and it wasn't enough as Ball State snatched away a WMU win in the fifth overtime, 60-57.
Brian Jackson's 30-yard field goal in the fifth overtime ended the longest game in Mid-American Conference history, giving Ball State a 60-57 win over Western Michigan (3-3, 1-2) on Saturday night.
After Jackson hit the kick, he was mobbed and knocked to the turf by his teammates in celebration. It was Ball State's (1-4, 1-1) first win since last November, snapping a five-game losing streak.
"Two teams played their hearts off. It's too bad there has to be a winner because both football teams played hard," said Ball State coach Brady Hoke. "We were fortunate because it could have gone either way."
The teams combined for 1,090 yards of total offense and 16 touchdowns in a game that took four hours to complete. It was the longest NCAA game this season, but fell two overtimes short of the NCAA record.
"We had a ton of chances to win, but just didn't finish," said Western coach Bill Cubit. "They got it done and we didn't; give them a lot of credit. We had a lot of outstanding individual performances, but it just didn't work out."
Both quarterbacks - Ball State's Joey Lynch and Western's Hiller - threw for more than 300 yards. Lynch completed 23 of 40 passes for 306 yards. Jennings' school-record fourth touchdown catch in the third overtime gave Western (3-3, 1-2) a chance to win, but the Broncos' 2-point conversion failed.
Jennings had a career-best 244 receiving yards, pushing his career yardage over 3,000.
Western's Nate Meyer had two chances to win it; he missed a 49-yard field goal on the last play of regulation and missed a 32-yard kick on the final play of the fourth overtime.
