HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Western Michigan women's soccer team concluded its early season road trip with a 3-1 victory over Hawaii on Thursday night.
Sophia Bowman,
Tessa Fagerson and
Irelyn Sheldon all scored their first goals of the season.
Reagan Sulaver made three saves in net to earn her first win of the year.
FIRST HALF
The Broncos set the tone early, scoring in the sixth minute.
Meredith Vance found Bowman in the box and she fired a shot into the back of the net. The goal was the first of her career.
WMU kept its foot on the gas, getting another goal from Fagerson in the 20th minute.
Camryn Huhn made a nice touch to Fagerson who did the rest to push the lead to 2-0. The offensive onslaught didn't stop there, as
Olivia Smith and Fagerson each got looks on net moments later.
Down the stretch of the half, Western Michigan's pressure was too much to handle for the Rainbow Wahine. Sheldon netted her first career goal to help the Brown and Gold take a 3-0 lead into the halftime break.
SECOND HALF
The Brown and Gold didn't slow down in the second half, earning an early corner kick in the opening minutes. From that, Vance hit the crossbar, but Hawaii was able to eventually clear the ball from trouble.
Western Michigan did well to clear a Hawaii chance in the 53rd minute to maintain its 3-0 advantage. However, the Rainbow Wahine would eventually strike, cutting the WMU lead to two (3-1) in the 56th minute.
Then, in the 59th minute, Sulaver stopped a point-blank shot to keep the Broncos in front by two goals. WMU went back on the attack, getting great shots from
Heidi Thomasma and
RJ Wagamon. Wagamon would add another shot with just over 10 minutes to play.
Down the stretch, Sulaver made one more save, and
Drew Martin fired a shot on goal. Neither team would find the back of the net, and the Broncos closed out a 3-1 victory.
