KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Sophomore
Hampton Slukynsky was selected as the NCHC Goaltender of the Week for the fifth time, the league announced this afternoon.
The Warroad, Minn. native was by far and away the best goalie in the conference this past weekend, collecting a 2-0-0 record to go along with a 0.48 goals against average and .982 save percentage. He made 56 saves and recorded one shutout in the series.
He opened the series with a dazzling performance, helping WMU to a shootout win. He stopped 28 shots between regulation and overtime, while adding three more in the shootout. Slukynsky was dominant late in the game, making 14 saves between the third period and overtime.
The following night, he was even better. The Los Angeles Kings draft pick made 28 more saves and didn't let anything get by him. Like Friday's game, he was great down the stretch on Saturday, as he made 23 saves between the second and third periods.
Not to be overlooked, Slukynsky played a big role in WMU's power play going perfect on the weekend. Western Michigan's PK unit was 10-for-10 against the Tigers, including a kill on a major penalty.
Slukynsky has started every game for the Brown and Gold this season, boasting an NCAA leading 23 victories. Along with that, he has a 2.25 GAA, .916 save percentage and 786 total saves. He also leads the NCHC and is third in the nation with four shutouts.
The Broncos have a big series this weekend, as North Dakota will be in town to battle for the Penrose Cup. With a weekend sweep over the Fighting Hawks, WMU would be the first back-to-back champion since Denver in 2021-22 and 2022-23. The series will begin on Friday at 7 PM at Lawson Arena.
