Bronco men's soccer continues road swing at No. 11 Akron

AKRON, Ohio -- The Western Michigan men's soccer team continues its three game road trip with a stop at a ranked opponent on Tuesday night in the no. 11 Akron Zips.

LAST TIME OUT
The Broncos were only 10 seconds away from their first draw of the season at Butler on Friday evening. But a late press by the Bulldogs instead handed Western Michigan its fourth loss of the season. WMU gave up its second goal of the match with seven seconds left on the clock in Friday night's match.

Western Michigan did have three players have big offensive outings at Butler despite the match's result. Midfielder Gabe Villagomez and forwards Piero Sabroso and Jonathan Stout all had three shots in Indianapolis, while Sabroso had all three of his land on goal.

ONE WEEK WITH SABROSO
Graduate forward Piero Sabroso has made an immediate impact on the WMU offense in his first week of play. After not being able to appear in the first three games of the season or Western Michigan, Sabroso started the past two games for the Broncos.

In those two games, Sabroso earned at least a point for WMU's offense while also being second on the team in shots. Sabroso scored his first goal as a Bronco on the road at Butler, tying up the match for Western Michigan in the 43rd minute. He also was awarded WMU's only penalty kick of the season so far in the 58th minute of the match.

CORNER KICK FRENZY
The Broncos had a big game in the corners against Butler on Friday. WMU had a season-high 10 corner kicks at the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl. Western Michigan scored its lone goal of the game off one of its 10 corner attempts at the end of the first half. The last time the Broncos had double-digit corner kicks was last season against Bradley in a 0-0 draw with 11 corner kicks.

SCOUTING THE ZIPS
Akron comes into Tuesday night's match with a big win under its belt after taking down No. 16 Ohio State 2-0 in Columbus. The Zips have not lost a match yet in 2025 with wins over Cleveland State, Northern Kentucky, and VCU with a tie to No. 8 West Virginia. Akron will likely move into the Top 10 in the United Soccer Coaches poll when it releases on Tuesday afternoon before the match at 3 p.m.

The Zips are led by redshirt sophomore midfielder Caleb Borneo, who is the only player with multiple goals on the season with two. Along with Borneo, Akron has six separate players that have scored in the first three weeks of the season. The Zips have also had strong play in net, not allowing a goal against through five games. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Mitch Budler has started all five games for Akron, making 10 saves to be one of 13 goalies with a 1.00 goals against average.
