KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team will finish up non-conference play with a home match against DePaul tomorrow afternoon. The game is set for 2 PM at the WMU Soccer Complex.
LAST TIME OUT
Western Michigan collected its third win in a row, defeating Detroit Mercy 4-1 on Sept. 7 at the WMU Soccer Complex.
Abby Werthman scored twice, including her 50th career goal.
Mikayla Coore-Pascal and
Heidi Thomasma also found the back of the net.
Madi Canada,
Abigail Baldridge and
Jaida Manderson had assists in the match.
In net,
Reagan Sulaver picked up her third career win, stopping two shots.
WE ARE NOT WERTHY
Veteran forward
Abby Werthman transferred in from Madonna a few years ago and has done nothing but produce for the Brown and Gold.
The Livonia native scored her 50th career goal last weekend against Detroit Mercy, including the game-winning goal in the match. She had 29 goals at Madonna and currently sits with 21 tallies at WMU.
Werthman's consistent production has her on track to make history. She is just 13 points shy of matching the program record for career points.
Jen Blitchok is the current leader at 71 points. Werthman is currently sixth all-time with 58 points.
DOMINATING DEFENSE
After fielding the MAC's best defense last season, WMU has started to find its footing over the last few games.
The Broncos have allowed just two goals in the last three games, including a shutout against Creighton. In total, the Brown and Gold have let in just six goals in five games.
That unit is led by captains
Mira Pierre-Webster and
Heidi Thomasma. That duo has played every minute on the back line, limiting opponents to just 28 total shots on goal.
Pierre-Webster has won MAC Defensive Player of the Week once so far this season and Thomasma tallied a goal last week against Detroit Mercy.
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEMONS
DePaul is off to a 3-4 start to the season, including a 1-3 record over the last four games. The Blue Demons have scored just one goal in that stretch, which was a 1-0 victory over Eastern Michigan.
WMU trails the all-time series, 1-2-1. The two teams tied in Chicago last season. The Broncos' lone win against DePaul came back in 2004.
Katelyn Jamie leads the offense with three goals. Tessa Fagerson and Mya Gardner have each chipped in two goals and one assist in seven games this season.
In net, Mason Hillery has started all seven games. She holds a 3-4-0 record, 1.14 goals against average and .692 save percentage.
