KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Western Michigan men's tennis senior
Anton Arzhankin has won Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Awards, earning the Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award and the ITA Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award.
The ITA Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding student-athletes in all five divisions (NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO) at the regional and national level. This prestigious award, which dates back to 1982, is presented to the men's and women's national student-athletes who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
The Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award is in honor the of University of Southern California great. Known for his charisma and high-level of play, Osuna is the only player to this day to be ranked No. 1 in the world while on a college roster. He won two NCAA Championships with the Trojans as well as a NCAA singles title and three NCAA doubles titles. Osuna tragically died in a plane crash at the age of 30 in his home country of Mexico after leading Mexico to its first-ever Davis Cup victory. This award is given to a player that demonstrates extraordinary commitment and unwavering dedication to his team; with exceptional hard work, courage, sportsmanship, and a positive, cooperative attitude that makes people around him play better.
Arzhankin finished his WMU career as one of the most decorated student-athletes to come through the program. He is the only four-time First Team All-MAC selection in program history. As a freshman, he earned MAC Freshman of the Year and was named the MAC Tournament MVP after leading the Broncos to a title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Arzhankin won three MAC Regular Season Championships in his time with the Broncos and wrapped up his career as the MAC Player of the Year.
The Moscow, Russia, native was just as accomplished in the classroom, earning three Academic All-MAC Team honors. He is also a three-time ITA Scholar Athlete and was WMU's Male MAC Medal of Excellence recipient this year.
