ATHENS, Ohio – The Western Michigan track and field team finished in sixth place with 74 points at the MAC Championships. The Broncos have now finished top six at the conference meet in back-to-back seasons.
Mabinty Kebe stole the show on the final day, winning the 400-meter hurdles for the second consecutive season. She broke the MAC Championship record, crossing the finish line in a time of 57.46. Just behind Kebe was Angel Pratt, who collected third place with a time of 1:00.10. That duo put 16 points on the board for the team.
Early in the meet, the 4x100 relay team elevated itself to sixth place, earning a time of 45.91. WMU's group consisted of Sandra Ferrari, Pratt, Laurie-Ann Desormes and Soniya Jones.
Following that, Kebe and Ferrari were able to post strong results in the 100-meter hurdles. Kebe finished in fifth with a time of 13.86, while Ferrari posted a seventh-place finish with a time of 14.04.
The discus was another good event for the Broncos, as Bri'Yanna Robinson finished second to earn eight points for the team. She had a top mark of 49.98 meters. Lane Hagens had a throw of 42.59 meters.
After that, Lillian Zelasko went from unseeded to an eighth place finish in the 5K, thanks to a great late push. She crossed the finish line in a time of 17:26.02. Lily Overton just missed scoring in the race, collecting a time of 17:37.36.
Anichka Malachi was able to post a top leap of 11.58 meters in the triple jump before the Brown and Gold ended the day in the 4x400 relay. WMU's quartet of Jones, Desormes, Rebekah Asselin and Kebe was able to notch a time of 3:48.80.
