ATHENS, Ohio -- Western Michigan sophomore
Sandra Ferrari stole the show on Friday afternoon at the MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, winning the long jump and advancing to the final in the 100-meter hurdles. WMU sits in fourth place with 40 points after two days of competition.
Ferrari posted a school-record jump of 6.29 meters, while collecting a 100-meter hurdles time of 13.57. She is the first Bronco to win the long jump championship since Gabby Collins in 2018.
Joining Ferrari in the 100-meter hurdles final will be
Mabinty Kebe. She was right behind her teammate, notching a time of 13.59.
Jade Celestine just missed the cut, recording a time of 14.17. In the long jump,
Anichka Malachi was able to post a top mark of 5.62 meters.
The throws group was able to tally 12 points for the team, thanks to a trio of Broncos making the podium in the shot put.
Bri'Yanna Robinson placed third with a throw of 15.62 meters.
Lane Hagens was right behind her in fourth place with a mark of 14.76 meters. Rounding out the scoring lineup in eighth place was
Tess Van Dyk, earning a throw of 14.21 meters.
The 3K steeplechase group added some more points to the board, as all four WMU competitors finished in the top 13. Thanks to a great kick on the last lap,
Lily Overton was able to collect second place with a time of 10:44.11. That pushed her into fourth in program history. Then,
Madison Zarembski crossed the finish line in eighth. She had a time of 11:06.77.
Behind her in ninth was
Ava Kurczewski, who had a time of 11:08.75.
Lara Machado Pereira posted a 13th-place finish with a time of 11:19.83.
Outside of those events,
Soniya Jones and
Rebekah Asselin just missed making the finals in their respective races. Jones had a 100-meter dash time of 11.95, while Asselin registered a time of 2:14.28 in the 800-meter run.
