KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan softball team opens Mid-American Conference play at Toledo this weekend, with a double-header on Friday and a game on Saturday.
Friday's action begins at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow. Saturday's start time has been moved up to 11 a.m. due to weather concerns. Live stats are available for all three games at www.WMUSTATS.com.
LAST WEEK
WMU went 1-3 at the Hoosier Classic, hitting eight home runs in the process. The lone win came against UIC in extra innings after
Micaela Booth hit her second two-run home run of the game to give the Broncos the lead in the top of the eighth. Western Michigan opened the weekend with a 7-2 loss to IU Indy and then an 11-3 loss to the host Hoosiers. The Broncos closed things out with an 8-5 loss to the Jaguars.
SCOUTING THE ROCKETS
This will be Toledo's first home games of the season. The Rockets are 0-6 in true road games and 5-8 at neutral sites. UT heads into the weekend on a 13-game losing streak.
Senior infielder Sidney Griffith leads the team with a .381 batting average. Her 24 hits and 19 runs are also tops on the team. Griffith has an on-base percentage of .425 6 and has struck out just three times in 63 at-bats. Samantha Bolding has a team-best 15 RBIs and is tied for the team lead in home runs with Audrey Miller and Jenna Bloomfield, all having two so far this season.
Sophie Knight leads the team in innings pitched with 60.0. The senior has a 2.80 ERA with 29 strikeouts and three complete games. Kylee Graham has been the other pitcher to see the most action, making nine starts and pitching 44 innings so far this season.
OHHHHHHHHHH SHE'S HALFWAY THERE
Freshman
Micaela Booth is halfway, actually more than halfway, to the all-time program record for home runs in a season. Last weekend at the Hoosier Classic, the Allen, Texas, native hit four home runs. She hit solo shots against Indiana and IU Indy and hit two two-run home runs in the win over UIC. The weekend pushed her total on the season to seven, with the record being 12 held by Sydney Stefanick and set back in 2019. On the season, she is batting .284 with a team-high 19 RBIs.
GETTING CLOSER
The Broncos are still on the road next week, playing at Notre Dame on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Broncos then make at trip to Michigan on Tuesday, March 25 for a 5 p.m. game before finally returning to Ebert Field to host Miami on March 28 and 29.
