Five Broncos named to CSC Academic All-District Team

GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Five members of the 2026 Western Michigan softball team have been recognized for both their athletic and academic accomplishments on Tuesday afternoon.

Seniors Tristen Head and Jordan Smith, juniors Caitlin Tighe and Megan Malartsik, and sophomore Rylee O'Brien were all named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District® Team this afternoon. This is Head's second time earning the recognition, while Malartsik, O'Brien, Smith, and Tighe are first time recipients. Smith has also been selected as a CSC Academic All-America® finalists and has advanced to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 16. 

Head played in 53 of 55 games for the Broncos with 49 starts as one of the team's defensive leaders with 239 putouts, 34 assists, and only four errors for a fielding percentage of .986. The senior catcher was also successful at catching runners trying to steal, throwing out 15 potential stolen bases. She also had a successful academic year, finishing the spring with an overall GPA of 3.90 in nursing while completing almost 200 hours of community service.

Smith had a breakout year at the plate for WMU with a .341 batting average while leading the team in doubles with 14 while also adding nine home runs for a team-high slugging percentage of .659. She also had high numbers in the field as an infielder, making 89 putouts with only one assist for a .989 fielding percentage while being named to the All-MAC Second Team. In the classroom, Smith holds a 3.50 overall GPA while majoring in sports management. Outside of Western Michigan, Smith volunteers as a travel softball coach for youth players in Brighton, Mich.

Malartsik had a career season in 2026 for the Brown and Gold with a .305 batting average that included 36 hits with six doubles, a triple, and a home run. She was also quick on the base paths, stealing three bases while earning 13 walks over 54 appearances. Malartsik is one of three Broncos with a 4.00 cumulative GPA while studying sports management.

O'Brien became a starter for WMU in 2026 with 50 games played and 48 starts over the course of the year in left field. The sophomore batted .328 at the plate with 45 hits including 10 doubles, two triples, two home runs, and 12 RBIs. She also led the Brown and Gold in walks with 18 free bases over the course of 137 at bats. In the classroom, O'Brien has a 3.90 cumulative GPA while studying special education.

Tighe was another explosive leader at the plate for the Western Michigan offense. With a .337 average the junior had 60 hits, 12 doubles, three triples, 10 home runs, 38 RBIs, and nine walks. Tighe led the team in stolen bases with four and was tied for the lead in home runs with freshman Bella Duncan. She was also one of only two Broncos to play and start in all 55 games this season in the infield. Tighe was named both to the All-MAC Second Team for her regular season play and the 2026 MAC All-Tournament Team for her efforts in Akron helping WMU to the Championship game for the first time since 2018.

The 2026 Academic All-District® Softball teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes softball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
