SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Western Michigan track and field team saw multiple personal-best performances throughout the weekend at the Meyo Invitational.
The sprints, hurdles and jumps group had an outstanding weekend. In the 60-meter dash,
Soniya Jones qualified for the finals and ran a season-best 7.51 to finish second in the event. Then, in the 60-meter hurdles,
Sandra Ferrari was able to qualify for the finals. She posted a season-best time of 8.56 to finish third.
In the 4x400 relay, WMU had a season-best time of 3:56.48. The quartet consisted of Jones,
Layla Wallace,
Jade Celestine and
Angel Pratt.
Pratt and Celestine were strong in the 200-meter dash, posting times of 25.26 and 26.52, respectively. Pratt then went on to PR in the 400-meter dash, earning a time of 57.44. Jumps wise, Ferrari and
Anichka Malachi showed why they are two of the best in the conference. Ferrari finished second in the long jump with a mark of 5.74 meters, while Malachi took 10th with a jump of 5.20 meters. Closing out the jumps, Malachi finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 11.50 meters.
There were also several personal bests in the distance events, as
Lily Overton and
Madison Zarembski were on their game in the mile. Overton had a PR time of 4:56.85, while Zarembski posted a PR time of 5:09.62.
Not to be outdone, the 5K group put together a special performance.
Lillian Zelasko led the way with a strong time of 16:51.54. Behind her,
Brooke Soper tallied a PR time of 17:28.06. Then,
Larissa McGrath was able to collect a season-best time of 17:59.80. WMU's final two finishers were
Lauren Sancrant and
Grace Aurand. Sancrant crossed the finish line in 18:14.16, while Aurand had a PR time of 18:17.62.
Ava Kurczewski produced a time of 1:37.74 in the 600-meter run. To close out the distance events, the DMR squad of
Lara Machado Pereira, Wallace,
CJ Nixon and
Madison Clor recorded a time of 12:25.13. That was good for 10th place.
Throws wise, Western Michigan had three athletes finish in the top 10 of the shot put.
Bri'Yanna Robinson led the way with a mark of 14.67 meters. Behind her were
Tess Van Dyk (14.11 meters) and
Lane Hagens (13.29 meters.) The weight throw was the last throwing event of the meet, and the Broncos had Robinson competing alongside
Kennedy Hagens.
Kennedy Hagens posted a PR mark of 15.96 meters, while Robinson finished the event with a throw of 15.90 meters.

WMU will be back in action on Feb. 14. The team will split up to compete at the GVSU Big Meet and David Hemery Valentine Invitational. Those are the last two meets before the Indoor MAC Championships.
