KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The National Collegiate Hockey Conference announced its weekly awards, with a pair of Broncos featured.
Hampton Slukynsky claimed the Goaltender of the Week award, while
William Whitelaw claimed the Forward of the Week honor.
Both played pivotal roles in helping WMU claim the Kwik Trip Holiday Faceoff Championship. Slukynsky was honored as the tournament's Most Outstanding Goaltender and Whitelaw claimed the Most Outstanding Forward award.
Slukynsky ended the weekend with a 2-0-0 record to go along with a 2.00 goals against average and .917 save percentage. He played every minute of the tournament and made 44 saves.
The Warroad, Minn. native came up clutch in the third period of both games, stopping 10 shots in a win over No. 12 Boston College and nine shots in a triumph against No. 2 Wisconsin. A breakaway save in the final period against the Badgers helped WMU stay in front 2-1. The Broncos went on to win 4-1.
Whitelaw was sensational throughout the tournament, tallying three goals, including a two-goal effort against No. 12 Boston College. His third period goal against No. 2 Wisconsin put the game out of reach and helped the Broncos secure a third straight win over a ranked opponent.
This is Whitelaw's second NCHC Forward of the Week honor this month, He leads the team with 12 goals and has added six assists in 18 games this season. He has surpassed his career high in goals and is one assist and one point away from career highs.
Slukynsky, Whitelaw and the Broncos will look to stay hot, as they gear up for a home-and-home series with Notre Dame this weekend. The series opener is set for Jan. 2 in South Bend, Ind. The two teams will play at Lawson Arena on Jan. 3 at 6 PM. For tickets, visit
