WELL, BYE
Tuesday is the final Mid-American Conference match up between Western Michigan and Northern Illinois, as NIU departs the MAC for the Mountain West Conference next season. It is the 51st meeting between the Broncos and the Huskies. NIU has taken each of the last three in the series and holds a 27-23 lead in the all-time series. Western Michigan's last win came back in 2021 in DeKalb, 42-21.
DOUBLING IT UP
In last Tuesday's win over Ohio, the Western Michigan offense averaged just 2.9 yards per play in the first quarter, but bumped up the production in the second and finished the first half with 4.0 yards per play and trailing 7-3.
The Broncos came out fire in the second half. In the third quarter, WMU scored a touchdown to take a 10-7 lead on the opening drive. It was the only time WMU would have the ball that quarter, but the team averaged 8.5 yards per play. In the fourth quarter, Western Michigan added another touchdown and controlled the clock thanks to averaging 8.0 yards per play. The Broncos ate up 10:17 of the final 15:00 to secure the win.
GETTING TO 30
Western Michigan has controlled the clock in seven of its 10 games this season. All six of WMU's wins have come when it reaches the 30 minute mark and wins the time of possession battle. The lone loss with the TOP advantage was against North Texas, where the Broncos held the ball for 36:38.
BALL HAWK
Western Michigan's
Tate Hallock picked off his second pass of the season in the win over Ohio and also had a pass breakup. In the game, the Broncos had four total pass breakups and limited Ohio and reining MAC Championship MVP Parker Navarro to just 70 yards on eight completions. It was the third time this season that WMU has held an opponent under 100 yards passing.
The Broncos have had at least one pass breakup in every game this season except for one, the season-opener against Michigan State in which Hallock had a pick-six. WMU has had four or more in four games this season, including a season-high of six against North Texas.
20k
Western Michigan is on the road for the remainder of the season, with its last home game coming against Ohio. With last Tuesday's attendance, Western Michigan averaged 20,194 fans at home this season. It's the first time the Broncos have averaged more the 20k at home since the 2016 season.
