CONROY, S.C. -- The Western Michigan football team earned its fourth bowl win in program history after a dominant 41-6 win over Conference USA Champions Kennesaw State at the Myrtle Beach Bowl at Brooks Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Redshirt junior running back
Jalen Buckley was named the bowl's MVP after rushing for 174 yards on just eight carries and a touchdown. The WMU (10-4, 7-1 MAC) defense produced two touchdowns on a strip sack fumble return and a pick six. The victory gave WMU 10 on the season, becoming just the second team in program history to reach 10 wins.
The Broncos jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the first play from scrimmage. After
Joshua Franklin returned the opening kickoff to the WMU 35, Buckley took the handoff and ran 65 yards for a touchdown.
On KSU's opening drive,
Rodney McGraw sacked quarterback Amari Odom and Kreshawn Fisher picked it up and ran 47 yards into the endzone to put Western Michigan up 14-0.
The Bronco defense then forced the Owls to a three-and-out, getting the ball at their own 40 yard line. Buckley then broke off a 31-yard run to move the ball down the field before Brock Lowry rolled out from the two-yard line and found Mareyhon Hrabowski wide-open in the endzone to make it 21-0.
WMU's defense continued to frustrate Kennesaw State and after another short drive, the Bronco offense took the field on their 24. Buckley rattled off a six-yard run and then took it 57 yards down to the KSU 13. A few plays later, Lowry hooked up with
Blake Bosma for the score to push the lead to 27-0 after a missed extra point.
Devin Miles added a rushing touchdown in the second quarter to push the lead to 34-0 at the half.
On KSU's opening drive on the second half, redshirt sophomore safety
Joey Pope picked off Odom and ran it back 75 yards for the pick-six. It was the first pick-six in WMU Bowl history and also the longest interception return.
KSU added a late touchdown to set the final at 41-6.
