KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Former Western Michigan University head coach Andy Murray was announced as the American Hockey Coaches Association's John MacInnes Award winner this afternoon. 

Established by the AHCA in 1982 to honor former MTU coach John MacInnes, this award recognizes those people who have shown a great concern for amateur hockey. The recipients have had high winning percentages, as well as outstanding graduating percentages among their former players. The winners of this award have helped young men grow not only as hockey players, but also more importantly, as men.

Murray joined the program in 2011, going on to spend 10 seasons with the Brown and Gold. In that time, he won 167 games. He surpassed 20 wins three times, guiding the Broncos to 22 victories in the 2016-17 season. 

The Manitoba native led Western Michigan to the NCAA Tournament twice in his career (2012 and 2017). WMU won the 2012 CCHA Tournament Championship. Then, in 2017, Murray was named the NCHC Herb Brooks Coach of the Year. 

The Broncos produced nine National Hockey League players and four All-Americans during his tenure. Murray announced his resignation prior to the 2021-22 season.
