MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Western Michigan senior Anton Arzhankin defeated Notre Dame's Chase Thompson 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-1 to win the Men's Singles Championship at the 48th annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Sunday.
Arzhankin's route to the championship began on Friday, when he opened up the weekend with a 6-1, 6-2 win over UND's Kyran Migimay to advance to the Round of 16. The Moscow, Russia, native advanced to the quarterfinals later that day after a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ohio State's Brandon Carpico. On Saturday, Arzhankin bested Wisconsin's Matthew Fullerton 6-2, 6-1 to move on to the semifinals, where he defeated Northwestern's Saiprakash Goli 6-2, 6-4. Thompson was the lone competitor to take a set off of Arzhankin all weekend.
Arzhankin was also awarded with the Milwaukee Tennis Classic Sportsmanship Award.
Sophomore Ashton Adesoro advanced to the singles competition Round of 16 after beating OSU's Alex Fuchs 6-4, 6-4. He would then move on to the quarterfinals after a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over UW's Michael Minasyan. In the quarterfinals, he was bested by Thompson in two sets 7-5, 6-1.
Freshman Solomon Dunsirn advanced to the Round of 16 after a withdrawal by Michigan State's Mitchell Sheldon, but fell to the Wildcats' Saiprakash Goli 6-3, 6-4. Fellow freshman Oscar Corwin fell in the opening Round of 32 to Pepperdine's Linus Carlsson Halldin in two sets, 6-4, 6-1. Corwin later picked up a win in the consolation bracket with a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) decision over DePaul's Antonio Matteo Iaquinto.
WMU now has some time off before the ITA Midwest Regionals hosted by Michigan State, beginning on Oct. 10.
