Youngsters See Success as Men's Tennis Wraps Up River Forest Collegiate Invite

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team wrapped up its competition at Northern Illinois' River Forest Collegiate Invite on Friday and Saturday. 

#1 SINGLES
Freshman Oscar Corwin went 1-2 in the top singles bracket. Corwin dropped his first match to Northern Illinois' Iker Arrast. He rebounded with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Washington University's Colin Scruggs to advance to the fifth-place match on Saturday. Corwin was bested by Marquette's Tristan Ryerson 7-6 (3), 6-3.
 
#2 SINGLES
Freshman Alex Antonopoulos also went 1-2 in his first collegiate invitational. He opened with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Marquette's Cyrus Ahmad to advance to the second round. He then fell to DePaul's Tobias Leitner 6-1, 7-6 (5). Antonopoulos then took on NIU's Saul Berdullas in the third-place match, falling 7-6 (5), 6-1.
 
#3 SINGLES
Freshman Jack Davison wen 2-1 in the No. 3 singles bracket. He opened with a 6-3, 7-5 loss to Illinois State's Tin Ostro but rebounded against Gus Howard from NIU, with a 7-5, 6-4 win. On Saturday he took down Eastern Illinois' Zach White in the fifth-place match 6-3, 6-2.
 
#4 SINGLES
Sophomore Dimitri Moriarty made the championship match of the No. 4 singles flight, going 2-1. He opened with a 6-0, 6-2 win over WU's John Fakouri. Moriarty then defeated Remi St. Laurent from Marquette 7-6 (3), 7-5 to advance to the championship match. He then fell to DePaul's Sven Moser in two sets 6-2, 6-4.
 
#5 SINGLES
Sophomore Adrian Quiros went 2-1 en route to taking third place. He advanced to the second round after his first round opponent retired. Quiros then fell short to DePaul's Andy Hadziabdic 6-2, 6-2, but rebounded with a 6-2, 7-5 win over EIU's Tyler Carlin the third place match.
 
#6 SINGLES
Freshman Solomon Dunsirn also took third place in his flight, going 2-1. He opened with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 win over Suo Nan from NIU. He dropped his second match, 6-4, 6-4, to Jona Gitschel from DPU, but rebounded with a 6-1, 7-6 (0) victory in the third place match against Marquette's Evan Glebov.
 
#1 DOUBLES
Corwin and Antonopoulos were paired up for the Broncos in the top flight, taking third place after going 2-1. The duo opened with a 6-3 win over UIC's pairing of Savic and Franca, but fell in the second round to Illinois State's team of Valencia and Scarlett, 7-6 (5). They rebounded with a 7-6 (4) win over EIU's Bouman and White.
 
#2 DOUBLES

Davison and Dundirn dropped their opening match, 6-4, to Eastern Illinois' Aldaz and Wiggett, but went on to win two straight and take fifth place. The first win, 7-6 (4), came against Marquette's pairing of Heineman and St. Laurent. In the fifth-place match, they earned another tight win, this time defateing ISU's Dibildox and Ostro, 7-5.

#3 DOUBLES
WMU's sophomores paired up to go 2-1 and take fifth place. Moriarty and Quiros dropped the opening match to NIU's Howard and Nan, 6-3, but advanced past MU's Wong and Glebov, 6-4, to make the fifth place match. They then defeated EIU's Schut and Carlin, 6-3.
 
Western Michigan hosts the annual WMU/Vredevelt Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Sorensen Courts. Action goes on all day and admission is free.
