KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Missouri Valley Conference announced its players of the week Tuesday afternoon. After the conclusion of the second week of the season, Western Michigan men's soccer duo midfielder Carson Hodgson and defender Carter Cormier swept the Player of the Week honors with Hodgson earning offensive and Cormier earning defensive player of the week accolades.
This past week, the duo led WMU to a 2-0 record with a 1-0 home victory over #9 Northwestern on Friday and a 5-1 home win over Air Force on Sunday. Hodgson's and Cormier's selections mark the first time in program history the men's soccer team swept MVC Player of the Week awards. The duo's efforts allowed WMU to not only go undefeated on the week but also improved the program's unbeaten streak to a historic 26th and 27th games without a loss.
In WMU's first match of the week versus #9 Northwestern, Hodgson supplied the game-winning goal in the 47th minute of the Brown and Gold's 1-0 victory at WMU Soccer Complex. Hodgson's game-winner helped WMU snap #9 Northwestern's four-game winning streak to open the season. Following the victory, Hodgson scored the game-winning goal in the 14th minute against Air Force on Sunday to improve his weekly tally to two game-winning goals. The game-winners marked the midfielder's second and third of his career.
For Cormier, he led WMU's defensive efforts in a superb shutout over #9 Northwestern on Friday. The #9 Wildcats had scored in every game leading up to the match against WMU. During the contest, Cormier made crucial clearances and stops against the Wildcat offense. Later, on Sunday against the Falcons, the defender supplied two assists (tied for a game-high).
