Men’s Soccer Hosts Villanova For Labor Day Soccer Fest Showdown

KALAMAZOO, Mich. –  The Western Michigan men's soccer team will host the Villanova Wildcats on Labor Day, Monday, September 2, at WMU Soccer Complex. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 PM, with Soccer Fest festivities beginning at 1:00 PM. For tickets, visit https://wmubroncos.evenue.net/events/SOC.

The Unbeaten Streak Continues

On Friday, WMU tied Akron University 1-1 behind graduate student midfielder Owen Smith's game-tying goal during the 49th minute of the second half. The tie extended the Brown and Gold's program record unbeaten streak to 24 games without a loss: The last time the Brown and Gold received a blemish to their record was over one year ago versus then ranked #12 University of Vermont on August 24, 2023. In addition to their overall unbeaten streak, the Broncos continued to protect their home turf at WMU Soccer Complex: Since October of 2022, WMU has compiled an incredible 12-0-2 record over their last 14 games in Kalamazoo.

Offensive Success

The Brown and Gold have seen no shortage of goals to begin the 2024 campaign: The men's soccer team has scored at least five goals in their opening three games of the season for the first time since 2021 and have achieved the feat for the 10th time since 2000. Of those five goals, eight Broncos, including graduate student forward Greyson Mercer, have contributed by either supplying a goal or an assist. Mercer paces the team with two goals thus far in 2024.

Scouting the Wildcats

Through three games into 2024, graduate student midfielder Jorge Garcia has led Villanova with a team-high five points behind a team-best two goals. Villanova enters the contest with a 0-2-1 record after a tie to St. Peter's University and back-to-back losses at Temple University and Michigan State University. Despite going winless, all three matches were one-score games for the Wildcats.

Series History

The Broncos and Wildcats face off for the second time in series history Monday. Last year, the two squads tied 2-2 on September 19, 2023 in Pennsylvania.
